Been, 2023

Acrylic on stretched canvas, unframed, 8 by 10 inches

Emotional detail: my long-time therapist I had seen for nearly a decade was very focused on me “finding the gray areas” due to some pretty extreme black-and-white thinking patterns I had (have?). At the time I did not have any autism diagnosis, but my friends with autism frequently suggested I was on the spectrum and a few teachers had brought it up as well. Something that I’ve heard other folks with late-diagnosed autism say is that there is frequently this emphasis on finding a middle ground or finding a gray area, and it is so emphasized that we become unable to see the extreme situations when they are real. We begin doubting when extreme things happen in front of us or to us. We doubt and downplay our extreme or intense emotions, dismissing ourselves and our reactions, because there just must, there MUST, be a gray area. Don’t numb yourself with grays.
